Voice output doesn’t work (Android)
If the voice output doesn’t work on Android, please make sure to check the following:
- Open the dialog “voice output”: Settings > Language and Input > Speech > Text-to-speech output or Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech Output
- A text-to-speech engine should be selected there (e.g. “Pico TTS”)
- If thats not the case, select one of the displayed engines
If an engine is already selected but the voice output does still not work or in case there is no engine available at all, please try installing the Google TTS engine following these steps:
- Open the Google Play Store on your device
- Search for the “Google Text-to-Speech” app (or use this link)
- Install the app and go back to the voice output dialog (see above)
- The Google TTS engine should now be available for selection
- Select the Google TTS engine as active engine
Install an older version of Speech Services by Google
In some cases, a current version of the Android module Speech Services by Google causes problems with the voice output. In this case, you can install an older version of the module. This works something like this (the procedure may vary slightly depending on the Android version):
- In the Google Play Store under “Manage apps and device” / “Manage” / “Speech Services by Google” and select “Uninstall”.
- Search the web for “Google Text-to-Speech apk” or “Google speech engine apk” and download an older version of your choice. Attention: Downloading and installing .apk files is at your own risk.
- Install the downloaded .apk file. Permissions may need to be granted for this.
- Select “Speech Services by Google” under Settings / Accessibility / Talkback / Settings / Settings for speech output / Preferred engine.
- Select language
- Important: Switch off automatic updates for Speech Services by Google, otherwise the manually installed version will be overwritten.
